Private equity firm 3i Group Plc has seen an increase in new deal activity. Total investments for the firm jumped 65% for the year. The firm also made a move towards the asset management business with a deal for Mizuho Investment Management.

Venture funding in the clean technology space has significantly increased over the last quarter. Venture capital funding hit the highest level in two years mainly due to biotech and alternative energy. The improving IPO market will be one factor that will help to generate interest in clean technology financing.

An article from the Dow Jones Newswire states that private equity investors bring their own alpha. According to a study by the London Business School and HEC in Paris, private equity alpha contributed almost 5% to the performane of private equity funds.

Reuters reports that Barclays Private Equity will spin out through an MBO over the summer. Barclays is also reported as targeting it’s first independent fund at 1.5 to 2 billion Euros. Regulatory pressures may also be at work in the decision to spin out from the bank.
